La fontaine des Truffoles

Le village - 07790 Saint-Alban-d'Ay

It's in 1540, in Saint-Alban d'Ay, that were cultivated the first potatoes in France, brought back from Spain and planted by the Franciscan monk Pierre Sornas, came to retire to the family home.

They called this potato in dialect "la(s) trifolà(s)." The generic name for the potato was in XVIIIth century "Truffole" which still designates today the plant (the trifola) and a current production registered trademark of an association of local peasant producers.
